The measurements given (.25 - 1mm) are basically to make sure all cable slack has been taken up, plus a tiny bit more. the cable is frayed or stuck down in the trans, the cable's outer housing has pulled out of the crimped end up at the spool and messed up the settings (happened to me), or it's simply mis-adjusted way too tight. Many people here have complained that even on very light throttle (one toe), their cars won't shift up until the engine is screaming. As the cable is pulled out, the pressure increases, and the shifts happen later (and firmer to match engine power output). The "kickdown" cable is actually a "throttle valve" cable, that modulates (adjusts) the fluid pressure in the transmission based on gas pedal position. I'll assume your AW71 is like the later ones. I don't know much about the 1.8 petrol engine and transmission, in fact, my last petrol car was a 1987 BMW 318i during my years at college while I was a student.I still don't understand the setting of my kickdown cable did I just hear you whisper sawdust?! :nah: I wouldn't.

Do this in third gear, then forth.Īnd look at it this way if it was caused by the gearbox, although i doubt it, then you'll find out sooner or later, there is nothing you can do about it. gearbox whines don't just vanish, they persist only to get worst over time.Īccelerate to high revs on an even road with smooth tarmac, like somewhere in Afghanistan for example, keeping it in gear just lift your foot off the gas pedal, and listen-in, don't press the the clutch until it begins to stall! If there's a gearbox whine then you'll hear it somewhere between 10,0 rpm, the whine will start from those high revs at a higher pitch then gradually get duller as the rpm fall. Well, you said that ever since you found and removed that foam, the whine is no longer audible so what else could it be?.
